A river born to run must not be stopped…" Social opposition and ecologist organizations in the provinces of Santa Fe and Entre Rios against the Middle Parana River Dam, Argentina (1996-1997) (in Spanish)

  • 1. National Scientific and Technical Research Council(CONICET, National University of Rosario (UNR), Rosario, Argentina

Description

his article addresses the struggle against the construction of the Middle Parana River

Hydroelectric Project that took place during the 1990s in the provinces of Santa Fe

and Entre Ríos, Argentina. The paper adopts the format of a photographic essay, but,

given the fragmentary nature of the photo archive, the narrative of this historical event

is developed by complementing the photographic record with other materials, including

cultural productions of that period such as songs, poetry, panflets and banners used

in the mobilizations against the megaproject, consultation with leading actors who

participated in the struggle, and research results from previous academic work.

The objective is providing a view of the struggle for a “dam-free Paraná river”, as the

process is known, that incorporates additional information that makes it possible to

revisit this historical process allowing space for alternative sensibilities in approaching

it.
