Exploring the Social, Economic, and Environmental Benefits and Challenges of Sanitary Landfill in the Al Jurf Landfill in Ajman

The Al Jurf Landfill in Ajman has been serving as the primary waste disposal site for the Emirate since 2006. With a daily processing capacity of 750 tons of waste, the landfill has accumulated a total of nearly 4 million tons of waste to date. In an effort to improve waste management and reduce environmental impact, the landfill has been adopting new technologies and processes, such as waste-to-energy, recycling, improved waste separation and collection, and wastewater treatment. This article explores the efforts made to improve waste management practices at the Al Jurf Landfill. The advantages and disadvantages of sanitary landfills, waste-to-energy, and landfill mining are discussed, with a focus on the benefits and challenges of these methods. The article concludes by highlighting the importance of the Al Jurf Landfill in sustainable waste management and its role in reducing the per capita environmental impact and air quality.
