Description
79. * Eugenia uxpanapensis P.E.Sánchez & L.M.Ortega, Phytologia 63: 404 (1987)
EOO: 274.370 km ². AOO: 24 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Endangered.
Eugenia uxpanapensis has a restricted distribution for the state of Veracruz from 150 to 350 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall between the thresholds of Critically Endangered and Endangered categories under the criterion B. There are up to five known locations, based on seven collection recorded, including five in the municipality of Hidalgotitlán and two in the municipality of San Andrés Tuxtla. The occurrence biome is the Humid Tropical Forest. Excepting the localities placed within the “Reserva de la Biosfera Los Tuxtlas”, which has a low level of ecological degradation (CONABIO 2018, CONANP 2006a), all the other localities are near urban areas or immerse in a fragmented landscape formed by fragmented habitats, from which is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. Therefore, Eugenia uxpanapensis is classified here as Endangered (EN), as it meets the criteria B1ab(iii)+B2ab(iii). Further field surveys and monitoring are needed to confirm population size, local threats, and habitat trend in the Los Tuxtlas region, which already which comprises an important region and yet studied by University National Autonomy of Mexico (UNAM).
Specimen examined:— MEXICO. Veracruz: Brigada 991 (MEXU!).
