Description

54. * Eugenia praeterita McVaugh, Fieldiana, Bot. 29: 450 (1963)

EOO: 8 km ². AOO: 8 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Endangered.

Eugenia praeterita is distributed in the state of Chiapas and Oaxaca, occurring in the ecotone between the Humid Montane Forest and the Temperate Forest, from 1,250 to 2,134 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of the Critically Endangered category, under the criterion B. It is only known by two records, representing two different locations. The habitat has a low rate of ecological degradation due to a smaller number of people living in the region known as “Sierra Morena”, in Chiapas; however, in the case of the locality in Oaxaca, the region is severely fragmented, threatening the habitat of the species due to the impact of human activities (CONABIO 2018). Considering that there is no information on population size or population severely fragmented, Eugenia praeterita is classified here as Endangered (EN), as it meets the criterion B1ab(iii)+B2ab(iii) due to its restricted distribution, number of locations and continuing decline of habitat quality.

Specimen examined:— MEXICO. Chiapas: García et al. 4855 (MEXU!).
