Description

44. * Eugenia michoacanensis Lundell, Wrightia 3: 16 (1961b)

EOO: 22,041.629 km ². AOO: 32 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened.

Eugenia michoacanensis occurs only in Mexico, between the states of Colima, Jalisco and Michoacán, a physiographic region known as “Sierra Madre del Sur” from 180 to 1,180 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B, whist the estimated area of occupancy (AOO) falls into the thresholds of Endangered category. However, it would probably exceed the thresholds of this category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are up to eight known locations, based on eight records found in the Dry Tropical Forest to the Humid Tropical Forest biomes, all of them have ongoing threats. The current state of its habitat is under low threat of ecological degradation (CONABIO 2018) and it is in the vicinity of the “Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve”, in Jalisco and in the Costa Sur region of the same state (Graf-Montero et al. 2015). Considering that Eugenia michoacanensis almost qualifies for the Vulnerable category under the criterion B, but it is not possible to infer a continuing decline or extreme fluctuations, then it is rated here as Near Threatened (NT) as it meets the criteria B1a+B2b.

Specimens examined:— MEXICO. Colima: McVaugh 15797 (MEXU!); Jalisco: McVaugh 15973 (MEXU!); Michoacán: Soto et al. 11264 (MEXU!).
