Semiotic and Aesthetic Approaches to Stage Costume Design of Theatre Performance

The purpose of the article is to systematically study the creative process of costume design and the basic principles of their creation for theatrical productions. The research methodology is based on the application of a semiotic approach to clarifying the principles of creating a stage costume. The authors of the article apply several research methods: the analytical method is used to review the philosophical and art studies literature on the subject of research; the theoretical method is applied during the analysis of the concepts of "fashion", "stage costume", "semiotics", "aesthetics"; and the conceptual method is used to identify the relationship between the symbolism of the costume and the general director's decision of the theatrical performance. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time the issue of aesthetic and semantic approaches to the process of developing a stage costume is considered. Conclusions. The analysis of various theatrical productions has revealed common features of the development of stage costumes of different historical periods. Despite the need to comply with historically established trends and the historical accuracy of fashion canons, the authors of the costume considered it necessary to add the author's changes to the created images. As a result, signs of semiotic and aesthetic approaches to the development of an author's costume, created following the historically established canons of fashion of a particular period, have been revealed. The article demonstrates that the formation of a costume is influenced by three independent production factors (aesthetic expediency of the costume, accessibility, and operation).
