Description

In the present essay, we aim to develop an analysis regarding state mechanisms of social control. We believe that, currently, there is a global movement to intensify the Penal System, with emphasis on the actions of the police forces, which are supported by increasingly violent measures against populations classified as unwanted. As it is an essay, we have not established an exhaustive exposition of data on the subject in question. What we seek is to encourage readers to perceive an ongoing process, shared by governments of different countries and to broaden the discussions about a reality that presents itself as exceptional, but that occurs daily in urban peripheries. To meet the proposed objective, the essay is structured in two parts: in the first, focusing on common processes, we will establish an analysis of the governmentality of the unwanted, describing the central aspects of this form of government in several countries; in the second, focusing on the Brazilian reality, we aim to identify the generalizations and particularities that make Brazil a country with high levels of state violence against impoverished population strata.
