The raw research data for geotechnical survey carried out at Iju-Itaogbolu/Ikere road

Description

Soil samples were collected for geotechnical analysis from six different locations within the area of study. The interpretation of the geophysical survey results informs the choice of the sampling points. Geotechnical investigation procedures were restricted to the depth of the undisturbed soil. Soil samples were collected using a chisel and spade for soil excavation. The pits were dug to about a meter depth, and samples were taken at 0.5 m and 1.0 m depths from each pit. Natural moisture content, sieve analysis, compaction, atterberg limits, and specific gravity tests were performed on the samples. Mechanical sorting helped in evaluating the particle size distribution of the dried coarse fraction's gravel and sand proportions. The atterberg limits (Consistency Limit Tests) were used to determine the plasticity of the cohesive fraction of sieved samples. The consistency limit test includes the linear shrinkage, liquid limit, and plastic limit tests. The difference between the liquid and plastic limits yielded the plasticity index, which represents the moisture content range over which the soil remains plastic. A compaction test used to classify and choose sub-grade materials for use in road construction was also done.
