Exploring the Financial Health of Nonprofits in Research and Scholarship

Hernández Ortiz, Tania

An initial analysis of the financial health of nonprofit organizations in the open research and scholarship ecosystem, focusing on those organizations reporting their financial information to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) via the standard Form 990. The goal of the analysis is to apply standard measures of organizational health and well-being and create meaningful baselines for assessing the financial health of organizations in this space. In this report, we lay the foundation for how we intend to begin assessing the organizational and financial performance of nonprofits in the open science and scholarly communication ecosystem to drive more and better targeted investment into the space, with an emphasis on those nonprofit organizations providing tools and technologies that enable research and scholarly communication.

Funding for this research was provided by the Mellon Foundation and Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing & Peter Baldwin. Additional information about how our work is funded can be found here: https://investinopen.org/about/how-were-funded/
