TYPE LOCALITY: "von Seehunden aus Kerguelenland". Restriced by Scheffer (1958) to "Anse Betsy (49°09'S, 70°11 ' E)."

COMMENTS: Reviewed by King (1959a, b). Peters' (1875) original description, based on two specimens, was considered by Allen (1880) as invalid (nomen nudum). A year later Peters (1876) learned the second specimen came from St. Paul or Amsterdam Island and gave it the name Otaria (Arctophoca) elegans. Allen (1892) and King (1959b) considered these as subspecific populations. Placed in Arctocephalus by Repenning et al. (1971).
