Canis Linnaeus 1758

Description

Canis Linnaeus, 1758. Syst. Nat., 10th ed., 1:38.

TYPE SPECIES: Canis familiaris Linnaeus, 1758 (= Canis lupus Linnaeus, 1758) by Linnean tautonomy (Melville and Smith, 1987).

COMMENTS: Van Gelder (1978) included Alopex, Atelocynus, Cerdocyon, Pseudalopex, Lycalopex, Dusicyon, and Vulpes as subgenera. However, this arrangement is not currently employed by most mammalogists (Berta, 1987, 1988; Corbet, 1978c; Corbet and Hill, 1980; Gromov and Baranova, 1981; Hall, 1981; Wozencraft, 1989b).
