Description

Balaena glacialis Muller, 1776. Zool. Danicae Prodr., p. 7.

TYPE LOCALITY: Norway, Finnmark, Nord Kapp (vicinity of North Cape).

DISTRIBUTION: Worldwide in temperate and subarctic seas.

COMMENT: Formerly considered to be three separate species, glacialis, australis, and japonicus; see Hershkovitz, 1961, Fieldiana Zool., 39(49):547-565. Includes sieboldi; see Tomilin, 1957, [Mamm. U.S. S.R., Adjac. Count.], 9:62; Rice, 1977. Gromov and Baranova, 1981:231, placed this species in Eubalaena.

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I as Eubalaena spp. and U.S. ESA - Endangered as B. glacialis.
