Globicephala melaena

Description

Globicephala melaena (Traill, 1809). Nicholson's J. Nat. Philos. Chem. Arts, 22:81.

TYPE LOCALITY: U.K., Scotland, Orkney Isis., Pomona, Scapay Bay.

DISTRIBUTION: Cold temperate waters, North Atlantic and southern Oceans.

COMMENT: Includes leucosagmaphora and edwardii; see Van Bree, 1971, Beaufortia, 19(249):79- 87. Kasuya, 1975, Sci. Rep. Whales Res. Inst. (Tokyo), 27: 110, described the historic distribution in the N.W. Pacific.

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as Order Cetacea.
