Rattus praetor

Description

Rattus praetor (Thomas, 1888). Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 1, 2: 158.

TYPE LOCALITY: Solomon Isis., Guadalcanal Isl., Aola.

DISTRIBUTION: New Guinea; Bismarck Arch.; Solomon Isis.

COMMENT: This name is used in place of ruber (now considered a junior synonym of nitidus); see Calaby and Taylor, 1980, Zool. Meded., 55:215-219. For information supplementing the original description see Thomas, 1890, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1889:481. Laurie and Hill, 1954:110, included feliceus in ruber, but Musser, 1981, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 169(2): 168, considered feliceus a distinct species from Seram.
