Description
Lynx lynx (Linnaeus, 1758). Syst. Nat., 10th ed., 1:43.
TYPE LOCALITY: Sweden, near Uppsala, Wennersborg.
DISTRIBUTION: Taiga forest from Scandinavia to E. Siberia and N.E. China; montane Europe (formerly widespread, now restricted to Balkans and Carpathians); Asia Minor through mtns, of C. Asia to Kansu, Tsaidam (Tsinghai), Shansi, and Szechwan (China); Sakhalin (U.S. S. R.); perhaps Sardinia.
COMMENT: Does not include canadensis or pardinus; see Matyushkin, 1979, Arch. Zool. Mus. Moscow St. Univ., 18:76-162, and Werdelin, 1981, Ann. Zool. Fenn., 18:37- 71. Includes isabellina; see Corbet, 1978:183.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as Felidae.
