Sorex caecutiens Laxmann, 1788. Nova Acta Acad. Sci. Petrop., 1785, 3:285.

TYPE LOCALITY: U.S. S. R., Siberia, Lake Baikal (neighborhood of Irkutsk).

DISTRIBUTION: Taiga and tundra zones from E. Europe to E. Siberia, south to C. Ukraine, N. Kazakhstan, Altai Mts., C. Mongolia, Kansu (China) and N. E. China, to Korea; Sakhalin; Hokkaido, N. Honshu, and Shikoku (Japan).

COMMENT: Includes cansulus, macropygmaeus, buxtoni, and centralis; see Corbet, 1978:20. However cansulus may not be conspecific (JAJ and RSH). Corbet, 1978: 20 included shinto in this species (see comment under shinto).
