Lepus timidus Linnaeus, 1758. Syst. Nat., 10th ed., 1:57.

TYPE LOCALITY: Sweden, Uppsala.

DISTRIBUTION: Alaska (U.S.A.) to Labrador and Newfoundland (Canada) and Greenland; Palearctic from Scandinavia to Siberia (U.S. S.R.) south to Hokkaido (Japan); Sikhote Alin Mtns. (U.S. S. R.); Heilungkiang, N. Sinkiang (China) (SW); Altai, N. Tien Shan; N. Ukraine, and Lithuania; isolated populations in the Alps, Scotland, and Ireland.

COMMENT: Includes othus and arcticus; see Corbet, 1978:73. Corbet and Hill, 1980:197, listed arcticus as a distinct species; Hall, 1981:318, listed both as distinct species.

ISIS NUMBER: 5301409002002023001 as L. timidus.
