Mastodon footprints or water erosion in the Quebrada de Chalán (Licto, Ecuador)

Description

The Chalán Gorge is a deep-bed stream that runs through Licto (Ecuador). Known since the nineteenth century for the abundance in its profiles of paleontological remains of fauna and megafauna of the Pleistocene, where entire remains of mastodons were recovered. The abundance of these remains meant that one of the high areas, where there were pots of different shapes, were traditionally considered as mastodon footprints. Archaeological prospecting, GIS technology, UAVs, photogrammetry and the geological study of the site, allowed to determine that the mythical mastodon footprints are actually marmites made by the water erosion produced in the same ravine over time.
