Search for a sterile neutrino at MicroBooNE using BNB and NuMI beams

Description

Abstract: A search for a sterile neutrino is being carried out in the MicroBooNE experiment with the 3+1 (three flavors of active neutrino + one flavor of sterile neutrino) framework. This search will simultaneously use neutrinos from both on-axis Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at a baseline of ~470 m with mean neutrino energy at 800 MeV and off-axis Neutrino from the Main Injector (NuMI) beam at a baseline of ~680 m with neutrinos up to a few GeV. The sensitivity of this search is built upon the high-performance inclusive charged-current electron neutrino and muon neutrino event selections, which were utilized in the previous search for a low-energy excess in electron neutrino energy spectrum at MicroBooNE. Cancellation between electron neutrino (nue) disappearance and muon neutrino (numu) to electron neutrino (nue) appearance oscillations may lead to a reduced oscillation effect in the nue energy spectrum resulting in a degeneracy in the oscillation parameters. Such a degeneracy can be broken by the different intrinsic nue/numu ratios in BNB (~0.5%) and NuMI (~5%), allowing to test the sterile neutrino hypothesis explaining the Neutrino-4/Gallium/BEST nue disappearance anomalies and LSND nue appearance anomaly. In this poster, the status of this analysis will be presented.
