ReadIT learning environment and learning analytics research tool

  • 1. University of Turku

Description

The ReadIT application was developed as a learning environment that supports learning, especially for the social sciences and humanities, where reading different texts and assimilating extensive textual content play a key role. The application allows the learner to take notes and highlight the text itself, as well as perform various exercises related to the contents. In addition, the student can monitor their own learning, for example, in terms of time use, utilization of various activities and success in exercises.

For the teacher, the application allows courses to be designed in such a way that text contents and different tasks that support learning (such as different variations of traditional multiple choice, matching, or true / false questions, but also essay and concept definition tasks) alternate during the learning progress, as well as including electronic exams to courses. The evaluation of tasks and exams can be based entirely or partly on automatic evaluation (also in so-called conceptual tasks). It is also possible for the teacher to evaluate the assignments themselves and provide personal feedback.

ReadIT also enables the use of different forms of group work in the courses, as well as communication and peer feedback between learners. Visibility to the teacher is also conveyed about these learning activities.

For learning analytical research, ReadIT enables the monitoring of students' activities, choices and movements during the learning process, as well as information on the results of assignments and exams. Unlike many other tools, ReadIT specifically provides an opportunity to monitor and analyze learners’ different learning strategies.

The ReadIT application is implemented with the PHP (version 7.2) programming language, utilizing the MySQL (version 5.5) database, as well as the Bootstrap (verion 3.3.6) framework and the jQuery (version 1.12) and jQuery UI (version 1.10.4) JavaScript libraries. Deploying an application requires upgrading the application components to supported versions.
