Description
It is noteworthy that Vaikunda Swami, a social reformer who emerged in Tamil Nadu, developed a new set of religious doctrines and thereby carried out many social reforms for the religious thought of the people in the community. It would not be an exaggeration to say that his reforms have been well received by the Nadar community but by other eighteen castes that bore parochial atrocities in southern Tamil Nadu. It is exemplanary to say that he fought against the racism of the upper castes against the people and the king. He also spoke out for women's rights. Today, however, his movement has lost its essence of social reform and retains only the appearance of being a subdivision of Hinduism. He taught love and compassion among the people. He was the one who exposed the antiquity of the society to the people and motivated them for destroying the caste and religion differences. It is noteworthy, that this article is based on the religious thoughts of Ayyavazhi in Tamil society in the 19th century AD and his biography.
