Рад представља сумаран осврт на питање утицаја друштвеноисторијског и политичког миљеа на развој србистике. Идеја југословенства је, на при- мер, већ након Караџићева времена почела пуштати корене у науци о српском језику, што од млађих и долазећих генерација србиста захтева посебан опрез, те вероватно и ревидирање приступа низу језичких и књижевнојезичких питања садржаних у радовима српских (југословенских) филолога. Стога, с посебном пажњом треба приступати и огромном и вредном филолошком опусу А. Белића, који је обележио науку о српском („српскохрватском") језику прве половине XX столећа, пре свега у оном делу у коме је његова делатност била, или је могла бити, у служби политичке идеологије.

Socio-historical and political impacts on the development of philological studies have already been a subject of scholarly research. For example, the idea of Yugoslavism has long since gained roots in Serb language studies. Due to this, the generations of young Serb-language linguists ought to be very cautious and they should probably re-evaluate the approach to a number of linguistic issues, as well as the issues associated with the literary language. The huge and valuable philological opus of Aleksandar Belic, which made a decisive imprint on the doctrine of the Serb ("Serbo-Croatian") language in the first half of the 20'" century, should be analyzed with special attention. This particularly applies to those Belic's works that were, or may have been, in the service of a political ideology. This is necessary all the more because the generations of Serbian linguists will for long remain involved in some of the major linguistic projects, such as the SASA Dictionary, initiated under Belic's leadership after World War II.
