Description

Model description:
Digital outcrop model of the Kruseryggen and Urnetoppen cliffsides in Burgerbukta, Southern Spitsbergen. The profile shows an outcrop of the Mid Carboniferous to Late Permian deposits. The succession shows (mid-) late Carboniferous alluvial red-bed deposits of the Hyrnefjellet Formation (Fm.) which grade upwards into being interbedded by shallow-marine sandy deposits. Overlying the Hyrnefjellet is the Parallic to shallow marine sandstone and carbonates of the late Carboniferous to early Permian Treskelodden Fm. which is completely carbonate dominated towards its top. Overlying the Treskelodden Fm. is inner shelf chert deposits of the late Permian Kapp Starostin Fm. The boundary between the Treskelodden and Kapp Starostin Fm's in Burgerbukta records a major unconformity. Both the Hyrnefjellet and Treskelodden Fm's were affected by syn-sedimentary faulting in Burgerbukta area evidenced by the large amount of conglomerate deposits adn small growth faults. In addition, most clear in the Treskelodden and Kapp Starostin Fm's is Tertiary reverse faults formed during the West Spitsbergen Fold and Thrust belt.
