Description
Abstract
Background: Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) was investigated in cancer patients, as this group is often malnourished, in turn impairing survival.
Methods: A heterogeneous group of cancer patients received either normal dietary counseling or MNT, but both groups were followed for 12 months in total.
Results: With MNT based on Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis and Indirect Calorimetry, we found that subsequently Hydration, Fat Mass, Total Energy Expenditure and Overall Survival improved in men, but not in women.
Conclusions: MNT, based on practical measurements of metabolism, rather than theoretical calculations, seems to improve overall survival. We may have found a new pathway explaining this remarkable feature.
