Langapseudes

Description

Langapseudes sp.

(Fig. 7)

Material examined: 1 male (broken, appendages damaged) (K 41400), ANTXXII/3, sta. PS154/9, 62°31.47'– 62°31.36'S, 64°39.45'– 64°39.25'W, depth 3804.0–3808.0 m, 30 Mar 2005.

Remarks: Short (three – four times shorter than basal article) rami of pleopods classify the studied male as member of the genus Langapseudes. This determination however should be confirmed by mouth parts analysis.

At the moment the genus includes two species: L. tuberculatus madagascarensis Bacescu, 1987 found in NW direction of Madagascar and L. tuberculatus tuberculatus (Lang, 1968) occurring off Kenya coast. The elongated carapace (1.3 times as long as wide) distinguishes the first species from Langapseudes sp. with carapace as long as wide. L. tuberculatus tuberculatus has relatively short spine on eye lobes (twice as long as wide) and numerous hair-setae over all pereonites and pleonites. The spine on eye lobes are long in Langapseudes sp. (about four times as long as wide) while hair-setae are sparse distributed. It is assumed that Langapsuedes found in the West Antarctic represents a new species.
