Evagetes sahlbergi (F. Morawitz 1893)

Pompilus sahlbergi Morawitz 1893: 105, Ψ (lectotype—Ψ (designated by Tobias 1978: 135), "Terijoki" [Zelenogorsk near St. Petersburg, Russia]).

Psammochares (Psammochares) hybridus: Haupt 1927: 157, 166, 214, ♂ nec Ψ.

Evagetes crassicornis subarcticus Wolf 1964: 322, Ψ ♂ (holotype—Ψ, Norway, Mandal). Junior subjective synonym of Evagetes sahlbergi (F. Morawitz 1893) according to v.d. Smissen 2003: 192.

Evagetes implicatus auct. (nec Haupt 1941): Wolf 1970: 63, 66, Ψ ♂; 1972: 149, Ψ ♂.

Redescription of lectotype (female). Body length 8.9 mm. Fore wing length 7.2 mm. Head width 1.1X its height. Frons evenly convex. Ocelli small, POD: OOD 1.16X. Ratio of genal median length to eye median length (lateral view) 0.38X. Malar space 0.43X pedicel width. Clypeus longitudinally convex near anterior border, the latter weakly emarginated. Labrum flat with rounded anterior border. Mandible tridentate. Flagellomere 1 length 2.28X its width. Relation of scape, pedicel and two first flagellomeres 36: 15: 40: 40.

Mesosoma length dorsally 1.43X its width. Pronotum length 0.4X its width, posterior pronotal border distinctly angulate. Metanotum median length 2.55X metapostnotum median length. Propodeum with sharply defined anterior horizontal and posterior vertical faces, its median length 0.7X maximum width. Tarsal comb short, apical spine of tarsomere 1 scarcely touching the apex of tarsomere 2; apical spine of tarsomeres 2 and 3 projecting over the apex of tarsomeres 3 and 4 correspondently, tarsomere 1 with three spines, tarsomere 2 with two, tarsomere 3 with one, tarsomeres 4 and 5 without spines. Longer spur of mid tibia 0.8X tarsomere 1, longer spur of hind tibia 0.64X tarsomere 1. Claws symmetrical with additional inner tooth. Fore wing slightly infuscate, venation as in Fig. 12. Pterostigma small, slightly longer than first abscissa of R. Second abscissa of R 2.17X third abscissa of R.

Frons, supraclypeal area, gena, vertex, propleuron, and coxa with scattered erect long black setae. Mandible with two long curved strong black setae and seven shorter ones. Posterior half of pronotum, mesoscutum, mesoscutellum with sparse black setae. Mesepisternum anterior to coxa with black setae. Metanotum and propodeum lacking setae. Posterior border of S2–S5 with sparse erect black setae, S6 with scattered setae. T5–T6 with sparse black setae. Face with pale pubescence, frons, pronotum, and mesonotum with brownish pubescence, propleuron, mesopleuron, metanotum, coxa with iridescent pale pubescence; metasoma with very weak pubescence. Body regularly micropunctate. Body black, outer eye orbit near vertex with small pale patch, mandible brown basally, yellow-orange medially and brownish apically; legs brownish; T1 and T2 wholly and T3 basally ferruginous-red.

Kamchatka Terr.: 2 Ψ, Petropalovsk-Kamchatskiy, 6.VII.1981; 1 ď, 10 km S Kozyrevsk, 23.VII.1985; 1 ď, pass between volcanoes Koryakskiy and Avachinskiy, 1000 m, 26.VII.1985; 4 Ψ, Esso, 20.VII–6.VIII.2005. Magadan Prov.: 2 ď 1 Ψ, Seimchan, 24.VII.1975. Chukotka: 4 Ψ, Omolon River, 180 km S Omolon, 23.VII–16.VIII.1976. [All are deposited in IBSS].

Distribution. Russia (Primorskiy Terr., Kamchatka Terr., Magadan Prov., Chukotka, European part) (Tobias 1978, Lelej 1995, Loktionov 2009), Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland (v.d. Smissen 2003, Wahis 2007), Mongolia (Wolf 1981).

Hosts. Arachnospila (Ammosphex) abnormis (Dahlbom 1842), Arachnospila (Ammosphex) hedickei (Haupt 1929), and probably Arachnospila (Ammosphex) opinata (Tournier 1890) (v.d. Smissen 2003).

Remarks. Evagetes sahlbergi has been correctly identified only after lectotypification (Tobias 1978).
