Description
Frenulina sanguinolenta (Gmelin, 1791)
(Fig. 7 F–H)
This is a very widely distributed species, known from Japan, China and Australia to French Polynesia and Hawaii (Thomson 1918; Dall 1920; Jackson & Stiasny 1937; Hatai 1940; Richardson 1973 a, b, 1979; Zezina 1985; Emig 1987; Richardson et al. 1989; Saito 1996; Laurin 1997; Bitner 2006a, b, 2008; Logan 2007), and New Caledonia and the Norfolk Ridge (d’Hondt 1987; Laurin 1997; Bitner 2007a). Frenulina sanguinolenta is easily recognizable by its red colour pattern. It was found on three seamounts (Tables 1, 2), occurring in abundance on Antigonia whereas only single, dead shells were obtained from Crypthelia and Munida. It is known only from relatively shallow water (180–373 m; Fig. 14).
