Teaching science enquiry in the new 'normal'

  • 1. Canterbury Christ Church University

Description

Sherralyn Simpson and Caroline Thomas offer ideas around how science enquiry can be taught under challenging circumstances, through implementation of Epistemic Insight pedagogy to explore the nature of science in real-world contexts and mutidisciplinary arenas. Sherralyn explores a bridging question 'Why did Amundsen beat Scott in the race to the South Pole?' through the disciplinary lenses of science and history. Caroline considers outdoor science enquiry as a means to enable children's epistemic insight by exploring natural objects through the question 'How does the sycamore seed fall off the tree?', inviting children to observe and explain their observations of the natural world.
