Scytodes vassununga new species

Type material: Holotype: male from Parque Estadual de Vassununga [21°43' S; 47°35' W], Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, São Paulo, Brazil, 19–24 March 2002, Equipe Biota, deposited in IBSP 92316.

Paratypes: BRAZIL. São Paulo: same data as holotype, 23 1Ƥ, (IBSP 92315; 92318; MZSP); Ribeirão Preto, (Campus UNESP) [21°11' S; 47°13' W], 13, November 1993 – October 1995, E. Camillo (IBSP 36476).

Etymology. The specific name is a noun in apposition from the type locality.

Diagnosis. Males of Scytodes vassununga n.sp. are distinguished from those of the remaining Neotropical Scytodes by the retrolateral fold of the distal area of the bulb (Fig. 82). The females are distinguished by the apical constriction of the slightly globose hyaline pockets and by the apical position of the slender sclerotized areas (Fig. 85).

Description. Male (Holotype, IBSP 92316). Carapace yellow with brown pattern as shown on Fig. 80. Chelicerae orange with dorsal, longitudinal brown stripe. Pedipalps orange. Labium and endites orange, distally lighter. Sternum cream colored with brown markings in front of each coxae. Legs yellow. Femur I–IV with pair of ventral, longitudinal brown stripes. Tibia I–IV with dorsal longitudinal brown stripe and brown extremities. Abdomen gray with black pattern (Fig. 80). Total length 3.7. Carapace slightly domed, 2.0 long, 1.7 wide. Eye diameters: PME 0.16, ALE 0.16, PLE 0.14. Lateral eyes on a tubercle. Chelicerae with subapical hyaline keel and inconspicuous stridulatory ridges. Labium 0.20 long, 0.26 wide. Sternum 1.2 long, 0.9 wide. Leg measurements: I: femur 5.0, patella 0.5, tibia 5.4, metatarsus 6.8, tarsus 0.8, total 18.5; II: 3.5, 0.5, 3.6, 4.2, 0.6, 12.4; III: 2.1, 0.6, 2.3, 2.2, 0.5, 7.7; IV: 3.4, 0.6, 3.0, 3.6, 0.7, 11.3. Palpal femur with stridulatory pick short and stout on rounded, projected socket. Cymbium with single distal spine (Fig. 81). Bulb 0.64 long, medially narrowed and very slightly curved. Distal region retrolaterally folded (Fig. 82) and with a prolateral pointed sclerotized process (Figs. 81; 83). Abdomen 1.7 long, 1.6 wide, covered with slender hairs.

Female (Paratype, IBSP 92318). Coloration pattern as in male. Total length 5.4. Carapace domed, 1.7 long, 2.2 wide. Eye diameters: PME 0.16, ALE 0.14, PLE 0.14. Lateral eyes on a tubercle. Chelicerae as in male. Labium 0.20 long, 0.30 wide. Sternum 1.2 long, 1.0 wide. Leg measurements: I: absent; II: femur 2.5, patella 0.6, tibia 2.6, metatarsus 3.3, tarsus 0.6, total 9.6; III: 1.7, 0.5, 1.5, 1.9, 0.5, 6.1; IV: 2.7, 0.6, 2.4, 2.6, 0.6, 8.9. Palpal femur as in male. Epigynum with ridged positioning ridges separated from each other by their width (Fig. 84). Vulva with small, globose spermathecae on long, narrow stalks, anterior to slightly globose and medially constricted hyaline pockets (Fig. 85). Abdomen 3.7 long, 2.5 wide, as in male.

Variation. Four males: total length 3.4–3.9; carapace 1.8–2.1; femur I 4.3–5.0; bulb 0.58–0.64.

Distribution. Cerrado. Northwestern state of São Paulo.
