Bathyporeia Lindstrom 1855

Description

Bathyporeia Lindström, 1855

(Figs 1 4)

Bathyporeia Lindström, 1855: 37 59. — d'Udekem d'Acoz, 2007: 64 (ubi syn.)

Antenna 2: article 5 of peduncle distinctly shorter article 4; flagellum with posterior setae not more developed than anterior setae; flagellum increasing in size at maturity in males of most species. Mandible: incisor process with 2 or 3 erect spines; lacinia mobilis blade-shaped and elongate; palp with article 3 with D3-setae in mature males only, with F3-setae (isolated or forming groups); with article 2 slender (rarely slightly broadened), without B2-setae. Maxilla 1: article 2 of palp with scattered setae and without row of spines. Maxilliped: article 2 of palp with strong posterodistal lobe; article 3 of palp elongate and curved. Coxa 1 anteriorly directed, with anterior border strongly concave. Gnathopod 1 subchelate, reduced in size. Gnathopod 2 highly tranformed, neither chelate nor subchelate, with dactylus vestigial, with propodus elongate with very long setae on posterior border. Pereiopod 5 with dactylus vestigial. Pereiopod 7 with basis posteriorly not broadly rounded and distally not produced; ischium pentagona l. Urosomite 1 with two dorsal bumps; posterior bump with pair of anteriorly directed setae, with or without posteriorly directed spines. Uropod 3 with inner ramus very short and broadly elliptic, less than 0.2 times as long as outer ramus; outer ramus with variable number of groups of spines on lateral border; article 2 with or without setae on lateral border. Telson with only one group of lateral spines or setae (except for rare teratological specimens, which have two groups).

Type species. Bathyporeia pilosa Lindström, 1855. See Lindström (1855: 59, pl. 2 fig. 1–11).

Distribution and biology. Eastern Atlantic (from Northern Norway to South Africa), Mediterranean and Black Sea, Northwestern Atlantic; sandy bottoms; intertidal to 106 m. An enigmatic record of Bathyporeia sp. from the equatorial Eastern Pacific (Aerts et al. 2004) needs confirmation.
