Pyralis undana Fabricius 1787

Description

undana Fabricius, 1787

Pyralis undana Fabricius, 1787: 237; 1794: 281.

Type locality. Austria (“Habitat in Austria Mus. Dom. Schieffermyller”).

Material examined. None.

Identity. Rhopobota stagnana (Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) (Olethreutinae, Eucosmini).

Remarks. Fabricius (1787) literally refers to “ Phalaena rivulata Wien. Verz. 131.21” when describing this species. There is no ‘ rivulata’ by Denis and Schiffermüller (1775) but the latter authors refer to Tortrix rivulana Scopoli, 1763. Herrich-Schäffer (1851: 276) and Werneburg (1864: 554) conclude that Denis and Schiffermüller (1775) misidentified Scopoli’s species and that P. undana F. is really Sciaphila cuphana Duponchel, 1842 (sometimes incorrectly attributed to Treitschke and Herrich-Schäffer, but regardless, a junior synonym of Tortrix stagnana D. and S.). This synonym has been overlooked in modern literature (e.g., Brown 2005), but does not modify any previous concept of the species involved.
