Description

Uaiuara dianae sp. nov.

Figs 5–6, 37–40, 57

Type material. Holotype: ♂ from Cocha Shinguito (05°08’S, 74°45’W), Rio Samíria, Loreto, Peru, 12 May 1990, D. Silva leg (MUSM 505865). Paratypes: 2♀, Pithecia (11°05’S, 72°42’W), Loreto, Peru, 13–30 May 1990, T. Erwin & D. Silva leg. (MUSM 505867).

Etymology. The specific name honors the Peruvian friend and arachnologist Dr. Diana Silva, curator of the collection of the Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad Mayor de San Marcos in Lima and collector of the type specimens. Noun in genitive.

Diagnosis. Males of U. dianae sp. nov. resemble those of U. amazonica (Simon) comb. nov. in the lack of setae along the retrolateral groove of the palp (Figs 30, 38) but are distinguished by the vRTA, with long and spinelike projection, resembling a tree branch and by the embolus widened and laminar at tip (Fig. 37). The females resemble those of U. amazonica (Simon) comb. nov. in the epigyne with large projections of the lateral lobes, reaching the posterior margin of the median septum (Figs 31, 40). They are distinguished from the latter species by the median septum strongly indented anteriorly (Fig. 39) and by the Lp very wide and curved towards each other (Fig. 40).

Description. Male (MUSM 505865, holotype): Prosoma brownish orange with brown margins, brown along the margins of cephalic region and fovea and brown U-shaped mark extending from cephalic region to posterior margin of prosoma. Eye borders black. Chelicerae brownish orange with pair of longitudinal brown stripes. Legs and pedipalps brownish orange with faint brown incomplete bands (Fig. 5) Sternum pale yellow with pale orange margins. Endites pale yellow. Labium pale orange, distally lighter. Opisthosoma grayish brown with indistinct gray dorsal pattern (Fig. 5). Total length 6.5. Prosoma: 3.0 long, 2.7 wide. Opisthosoma: 3.3 long, 1.9 wide. Eyes: diameters: 0.22, 0.16, 0.14, 0.16; interdistances: 0.14, 0.04, 0.22, 0.18, 0.12, 0.04. Legs: I: 10.7 (3.0, 1.3, 3.1, 2.5, 0.8); II: 10.9 (3.2, 1.3, 3.0, 2.6, 0.8); III: 8.7 (2.6, 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 0.7); IV: 10.6 (3.0, 1.1, 2.6, 2.9, 1.0). Spination: tibiae I–II: v 9 pairs. Palp: tibia with one prolateral spine; vRTA enlarged at base and with long, spine-like projection resembling a tree branch; dRTA longer than vRTA and distally twisted; VTA retrolaterally displaced; cymbium with retrolateral groove extending throughout little over half the cymbium length; subtegulum/tegulum notch at 4 o’clock; tegulum flanked prolaterally by hyaline membrane, strongly protruding at the base of embolus and becoming slightly membranous at the base of conductor.

Female (MUSM 505867, paratype): Coloration as in male, with slightly lighter markings on prosoma and opisthosoma (Fig. 6). Total length 8.5. Prosoma: 3.0 long, 2.8 wide. Opisthosoma: 5.0 long, 3.1 wide. Eyes: diameters: 0.22, 0.18, 0.14, 0.16; interdistances: 0.18, 0.08, 0.22, 0.20, 0.14, 0.06. Legs: I: 10.7 (3.0, 1.5, 3.1, 2.4, 0.7); II: 11.0 (3.3, 1.5, 3.1, 2.4, 0.7); III: 9.0 (2.7, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 0.7); IV: 10.2 (3.0, 1.2, 2.5, 2.6, 0.9). Spination: tibiae I–II: v 9 pairs; tibia III: d0. Epigyne: epigynal field slightly wider than long; median septum three times wider than long, indented anteriorly (Fig. 39). Vulva: gp small and rounded arising close to Lp; fertilization ducts long, diverging posteriorly with tips pointing towards each other (Fig. 40).

Variation. Two females (n = 2): total length 6.6–8.5; prosoma length 3.0–3.1.

Distribution. Central western Peru (Fig. 57).
