Description
Hemerodromia smithi sp. nov.
(Figs 70–76)
Diagnosis. Tergite 1, anterior margin of tergite 2, tergites 6–7 yellow. Cercus narrow basally, curved medially, bifid at apex (Fig. 73); hypandrium narrower and bifid apically (Fig. 76); phallus sclerotized, with small membranous area apically (Fig. 75).
Description. Male (Fig. 70). Head. Dark brown to black, antenna and mouthparts yellow with all setae whitish; ocellar triangle with 1 pair of proclinate setae; anterior ocellus larger. Eyes iridescent black, very narrowly separated on face which bears fine reclinate setulae. Frons with 1 pair setulae; 2–3 pairs of vertical setae contiguous with uniseriate postocular setae; occiput bearing scattered fine hairs. Clypeus with rather dense short downwardly directed pile. Proboscis slightly curved with setae yellow. Antenna with scape and pedicel bearing distinct short dorsal setulae; postpedicel about 1.5X as long as wide, stylus ~ 0.8X as long as postpedicel. Thorax (Fig. 70). Yellow, short, arched ventrally; antepronotum with anterior margin almost straight and scutum with yellow setae, very small and fine except 1 notopleural. Legs (Fig. 70). Whitish yellow. C1 ~ 1.2X longer than distance between C1 and C2, 5X as long as wide with some pale dorsoapical setae. F1 about the same length as C1, 4.0–4.5X as long as wide; femoral formula 5–6/20–21/1+18–19/7–8; denticles confined to distal 0.8, becoming closer together distally, black, 2 rows linear, without distal discontinuity. T1 ~ 0.7X as long as F1, evenly curved, ventral face shallowly concave; with 2 rows of 19–21 sharply pointed spinose setae ventrally; dorsal ciliation of decumbent short pale setulae, denser distally; without apicoventral extension on T1 but with strong apical spine. Mid and hind legs slender with fine setae but T3 with ‘comb’ of short setae posteroapically. Wing (Fig. 70). Membrane faintly yellow, veins brownish; R2+3 long and straight, not strongly curved towards C apically,,joining C ~ 0.6 distance between end of R1 and R4; R4+5 fork angle acute (~ 60°), distal to position of M1+2 fork by ~ 1.5X as long as R4; R5 and M1 convergent distally and diverging at extreme apex; vein R5 ~ 1.5X as long as R4; cell bm+dm short, ending at level of R1, ~ 2.0X as long as cell br. Halter whitish yellow. Abdomen (Figs 70, 71). Tergites with posterior margin of sclerites 2, 3–5 and 8 brownish; tergite 1, anterior margin of tergite 2, tergites 6–7 and sternites yellowish. Tergites 7–8 with pale strong setae laterally on posterior margin; tergite 8 as long as sternite 8. Terminalia. Brownish. Cercus narrow basally, curved medially, bifid at apex (Fig. 73), with very strong inwardly directed setae apically on lower lobe. Epandrium wide, with scattered setae on outer face (Fig. 73). Surstylus simple, with distinct setae apically (Fig. 74). Hypandrium narrower and bifid apically, without distinct setae; gonocoxal apodeme confined to anterior margin of hypandrium, lacking narrow process. Subepandrial sclerite concave posteriorly, without posterior process. Phallus sclerotized basally, extending beyond hypandrium apex, with small membranous area apically (Fig. 75). Ejaculatory apodeme absent. Body length: 1.9 mm; wing length: 1.7 mm. Female: Unknown.
Type material. HOLOTYPE ♂. “BR[asil], AM[azonas], Manaus. R.[eserva] Ducke. IG.[arapé] Bolivia. Malaise, 18–22.ii.2003. J.M.F. Ribeiro” (INPA). PARATYPES: Idem, 21.xi.1992, Adesiva, Vidal & Jailson (2 ♂, INPA); Idem, Ig. Uberê, Malaise, 16.vi.–21.vii.2003. J.M.F. Holotype condition. Good. Not dissected.
Etymology. The specific name is in tribute to K.G.V. Smith due to his contribution to the knowledge of the Neotropical fauna of Empididae, especially that of Brazil.
Variation. Body length varying from 1.6 mm to 2.6 mm and wing length varying from 1.5 to 2.1 mm. Remarks. Hemerodromia smithi sp. nov. differs from another species by tergite 1, anterior margin of tergite 2, tergites 6–7 yellow and shape of the cercus.
