Zelima

Description

62. Zelima

[Zelima] Meigen, 1800: 34.

CURRENT STATUS: Unavailable name; work suppressed for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]); treated under Xylota Meigen, 1822 [teste Sabrosky (1999: 325)].

Zelima Hendel, 1903: 58.

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: None.

FIRST INCLUDED SPECIES: Xylota abiens Meigen, 1822 (with Musca semulator Harris, 1776, Musca tristor Harris, 1776 in synonymy); Xylota caeruleiventris Zetterstedt, 1843; Xylota cuprina Coquillett, 1898; Xylota curvipes Loew, 1854 (with Xylota satanica Bigot, 1884 in synonymy); Xylota eumera Loew, 1869; Musca femorata Linnaeus, 1758 (with Syrphus volvulus Fabricius, 1805 in synonymy); Scaeva florum Fabricius, 1805 (with Syrphus lugens Rossi, 1790, Xylota nemorum Meigen, 1822 in synonymy); Xylota fulviventris Bigot, 1861; Syrphus ignava Panzer, 1798; Xylota lenta Meigen, 1822 (with Syrphus pigra Panzer, 1798 in synonymy); Xylota longa Coquillett, 1898; Milesia nemorum Fabricius, 1805 (with Xylota bifasciata Meigen, 1822 in synonymy); Xylota nigripes Zetterstedt, 1838; Xylota nitida Portschinsky, 1880; Xylota pictipes Loew, 1871; Syrphus pigra Fabricius, 1794 (with Xylota crassipes Wahlberg, 1838, Milesia haematodes Fabricius, 1805, Xylota nigra Walker, 1849, Xylota pini Perris, 1871 in synonymy); Xylota rufipes Loew, 1873; Musca segnis Linnaeus, 1758 [with Musca brassicaria Fabricius, 1775 (as “ brassicaria Donov. ”) in synonymy], Musca fucata Harris, 1776 in synonymy); Xylota sibirica Loew, 1871; Musca silvarum Linnaeus, 1758 (with Syrphus impigra Rossi, 1790, Musca longisco Harris, 1776 in synonymy); Xylota tarda Meigen, 1822 (with Xylota confinis Zetterstedt, 1843, “ Xylota confluens Apetz et Wahlbg. in litt. ap. Zett.” in synonymy); Xylota triangularis Zetterstedt, 1838 (in Bezzi & Stein 1907: 127–132).

TYPE SPECIES: Musca segnis Linnaeus, 1758, by subsequent designation (Coquillett 1910a: 621).

CURRENT STATUS: Preoccupied by Zelima Fabricius, 1807; junior synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1822. New Synonymy.

FAMILY: SYRPHIDAE.

REMARKS: Zelima was originally proposed by Meigen (1800: 22) without included species and later made unavailable by the suppression of the entire work for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of the I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]). Hendel (1903: 58) proposed Zelima in synonymy by treating it as a synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1803, but did not include any species. Bezzi & Stein (1907: 127) treated Zelima as a synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1803, and included 25 species (under Xylota). Hendel (1908: 58) was the first after Meigen (1800) to give characters to differentiate the taxon (reproducing Meigen’s characters) and to treat Zelima as valid, which makes the name available from Hendel (1903). Coquillett (1910a: 621) selected Musca segnis Linnaeus, 1758, which is the type species by subsequent designation. Musca segnis Linnaeus, 1758 is currently treated in Xylota Meigen, 1822 [teste Sabrosky (1999: 325)], which makes Zelima Hendel, 1903 a junior synonym of Xylota Meigen, 1822, n. syn.
