Type locality. England (without exact locality).

Holotype. Natural History Museum, London (fide Lundquist & Edler, 1979).

Type host. The common mole, Talpa europaea (L., 1758), in nests.

Host range. Haemogamasus nidi has a very wide spectrum of hosts, including numerous species of rodents and insectivores (Bregetova, 1956a; Zemskaya, 1973; Whitaker & Wilson, 1974; Goncharova et al., 1991; Whitaker et al., 2007). May feed also on small birds (sparrows) and bats (Haitlinger, 1988).

Distribution. Holarctic. In all areas of Asiatic Russia.

Remarks. Sludsky (2014) listed Hg. nidi among mite species able to harbour Yersinia pestis – the causative agent of the plague
