Description

1. Dociostaurus maroccanus (Thunberg, 1815)

Distribution. Southern regions of Western Europe, North Africa, Southern part of European Russia, the Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Central Asia.

Locality. 2. Northern shore of the Tortkul’ Reservoir ca. 12 km West of Batken, saline meadow, 8. VII. 2014. Signals of 2 ♂ recorded on disk at 42o C.

References to song. Ragge & Reynolds (1998): recordings from Western Europe; Bukhvalova & Vedenina (1998): recordings from the Crimea; Savitsky (2007): recordings from the North Caucasus.

Song. The calling song is an echeme of about 4–9 syllables following each other with a period of 0.7–1 s (Fig. 2). Each syllable consists of 4–5 very brief discrete fragments separated by gaps and following each other with a period of 8–10 ms in our recordings from Central Asia (Figs. 3–6).

Comparative notes. The calling songs of males from Southern Kyrgyzstan are quite similar to the songs recorded from Europe, the Crimea, and the North Caucasus.
