Athoracophorus marmoratus Simroth 1889

Description

Athoracophorus marmoratus Simroth, 1889

Simroth, 1889. Nova acta Academiae Caesareae Leopoldino-Carolinae Germanicae Naturae Curiosorum, 54: 71, pl. 4, figs. 3–10.

Type material: Syntype (1), ZMB MOLL30217 (in alcohol) (Kilias 1974: 350).

Label details: ‘ New Zealand, Auckland Isl., leg.: Krone’.

Type locality: ‘Auklandinsel’ (Simroth 1889: 70).

Previous illustrations of type material: Simroth (1889: pl. 4, figs. 3–10).

Remarks: The description of Athoracophorus marmoratus was based on material collected in 1874 by the naturalist and photographer Herman Krone, during a German expedition to the Auckland Islands to observe a transit of Venus. Simroth (1889: 79) noted that E. von Martens provided the species name, but Simroth himself was responsible for the nomenclatural act of publishing both the name and description (see Barker 2018: 229). Athoracophorus (Pseudaneitea) martensi Suter, 1909 is an unnecessary nom. nov. for A. marmoratus Simroth, 1889, non Konophora marmorea Hutton, 1879 (Powell 1979: 301; Barker 2018: 229). Athoracophorus marmoratus Simroth was listed as Athoracophorus martensi by Suter (1913b: 800) and Grimpe & Hoffman (1925: 465), Reflectopallium martensi by Burton (1963: 57), R. marmoratum by Powell (1979: 301, fig. 72.7), and Pseudaneitea martensi by Burton (1982: 63). Athoracophorus marmoratus was originally designated as the type species of subgenus Athoracophorus (Amphikonophora) Suter, 1897, by monotypy, though the accompanying description by Suter (1897a: 256–257) was based on another species that he subsequently named Athoracophorus (Amphikonophora) giganteus Suter, 1909. The latter was listed as the type species of Amphiconophora [emended spelling] by Suter (1913b: 805), and selected by Barker (2018: 215) as the type species of Amphikonophora Suter, 1897 under ICZN Article 70.3.2.

Current Taxonomy: Listed as Pseudaneitea marmorata (Simroth, 1889) by Spencer et al. (2009: 215) and Barker (2018: 229).

Distribution: Auckland and Macquarie islands (Simroth 1889; Suter 1909a, 1913b—as Athoracophorus martensi; Burton 1963 —as Reflectopallium martensi; Powell 1979), but Macquarie Island record not confirmed (G.M. Barker pers. comm. 2018).
