Spungisomyia carinaolssonae Jaschhof & Jaschhof 2020, sp. nov.

Description

Spungisomyia carinaolssonae sp. nov.

Figs 44–45

Diagnosis. This new Spungisomyia, of which only males are known, is distinguished from the congeneric species by the parameres ending in flattened, rounded lobes rather than in single- to multipointed apices (Fig. 45, ↓ 1). Another peculiarity is that the gonocoxal emargination is only vaguely outlined (↓ 2) and filled by an elusive, membranous structure not illustrated here, probably a part of the aedeagus. Apart from those genitalic characters, S. carinaolssonae is distinguished by the flagellomeres whose necks are maximally as long as the nodes (Fig. 44), not markedly longer as in other Spungisomyia.

Other male characters. Body size 1.3–1.4 mm. Head. Eye bridge without ommatidia at vertex. Antenna as long as body. Scape and pedicel concolorous with flagellum. Circumfila on flagellomeres 1–13. Neck of fourth flagellomere as long as node or slightly shorter (Fig. 44). Palpus slightly longer than head height, 4 setose, subcylindrical segments, apical segment longest of all. Thorax. Presutural windows present. Pronotum with 2 setae; anepisternum with 1 seta; anepimeron with 3–4 setae. Wing markedly longer than both body and antenna. Length / width ratio 2.6. M 1+2 absent. M 4 weak, separate from CuA. Legs. Foreleg: femur slightly shorter than tibia, T 2 0.65 times the length of tibia. Empodia broad, as long as claws. Genitalia (Fig. 45). Gonocoxal synsclerite clearly broader than long, narrowed anteriorly; ventral setae mostly short, evenly scattered except a non-setose stripe medially; dorsal apodemes short. Gonostylus thick, slightly bent, parallel-sided to slightly tapered apically depending on viewing angle, 1.5 times as long as broad, outline in ventral view somewhat angular (↓ 3); apex with large, regular pectinate claw; 1–2 long bristles subapicomedially. Parameres moderately sclerotized, thin with broader apices that do not cross each other, transverse bridge present.Aedeagal apodeme thin, as long as both parameres and gonocoxae, moderately sclerotized, slightly broadened apically; base unmodified. Ducts of accessory glands distinct.

Etymology. This new species is named to honor Carina Olsson (Öland, Sweden), who until her untimely passing in August 2019 promoted – indirectly but effectively – environmental projects and education as well as science, including taxonomy, through her extraordinarily enthusiastic, thoughtful and altruistic support of Station Linné.

Type material. Holotype. Male, Sweden, Öland, Borgholm, Rönnerum-Abbantorp Nature Reserve, small bushy mire surrounded by broadleaf forest, 17 June–15 July 2015, Malaise trap, M. & C. Jaschhof (spn. CEC 2467 in NHRS). Paratypes. 1 male, same data as the holotype (spn. CEC 2468 in NHRS); 1 male, Öland, Mörbylånga, Ullevi, herb-rich meadow near broadleaf forest, 14 June–15 July 2015, MT, MCJ (spn. CEC 2469 in SDEI).

Remark on the classification. It is obvious that S. carinaolssonae is, in terms of male morphology, an unusual member of the genus Spungisomyia. We classify it there for (1) the presence of scutal windows, which among Porricondylini are found mostly in the genera Porricondyla and Spungisomyia; (2) the absence or substantial reduction of gonocoxal processes; and (3) the structure of the gonostylus which matches completely that found in other Spungisomyia. Even so, we think it worth pointing out that S. carinaolssonae is generally similar to species of Zaitzeviola Fedotova & Sidorenko, in particular the type species, Neocolpodia dubitabila Mamaev & Zaitzev (see the chapter on that species at the end of the next section, dealing with species discovered in Fennoscandia for the first time).
