DESCRIPTION

Shell solid, 4 to 13 mm, small in family, conical in shape and coarse in surface. Whorl, rounded, with or without a shoulder. Sculpture with wide and highly elevated axial ribs and narrow and less elevated spiral cords which is of one fourth to half the breadth of the axil ribs. Aperture, oval; umbilicus, slit-like. Periostracum, present. Operculum, corny with caudal nucleus.

COMPARISON AND REMARKS

Trichotropis Broderip & Sowerby I, 182 9 with type species Turbo bicarinata Sowerby I, 1825 bears bicarinate spiral cords and closed umbilicus. Trichosirius Finlay, 1926 with type species Trichotropis inornata Hutton, 1873 bears strong elevated spiral cords, weak axial ribs with beaded sculpture in their decussation. Ariadnaria Habe, 1961 with type species Trichotropis borealis Broderip & Sowerby, 1829 bears heavy elevated spiral cords, microscopic axial threads and slit-like umbilicus. Neoiphinoe Habe, 1978, new name of Iphinoe H. Adams & A. Adams, 1856 (non Rafinesque, 1815), with type species Trichotropis unicarinata Broderip, & Sowerby I, 1829 bears unicarinate spiral keel and wide umbilicus. Ciliatotropis Golikov, 1986 with type species Trichotropis ciliate Golikov & Gulbin, 1978 bears mildly elevated spiral cords, microscopic axial threads and closed umbilicus. Verticosta n. gen. is different from these genera by the axial dominant sculpture of wide and highly elevated ribs.

RANGE AND HABITAT

North Atlantic Ocean: North Carolina to East Florida; Mexican Gulf: Campeche Bank of Mexico, Florida Key to Havana; Caribbean Sea: Barbados and Guadeloupe; Amapa of Brazil; Range: 33.87°N to 4°N; 90.5°W to 51°W; Depth: 65 to 366 m.

East China Sea, northern to northeastern Taiwan, Keelung to Dali; China, Zhejiang; Depth: 100 to 400 m. Philippines, Mactan Island, Cebu; 200 m depth.

Indian Ocean, Gulf of Omen, 24°58’N, 56°54’E, 285 m depth.

ETYMOLOGY

This genus name is vertical ribs and comes from its distinguishing sculpture; feminine gender.
