The Voiceless Nasals of Standard Burmese
Abstract The voiceless nasals is a very distinctive phonetic phenomenon. As a phoneme, the voiceless nasals mainly appears in the Tibeto-Burman group of the Sino-Tibetan laŋuages. There are different studies on the voiceless nasals in China and overseas, based on the previous definitions and descriptions, we makes a systematic instrumental study of all the voiceless nasals in standard Burmese according to acoustics and aerodynamics. The acoustic features of Burmese voiceless nasals include duration, center of gravity, fricative energy range, etc. The aerodynamic features of Burmese voiceless nasals include duration, oral flow, nasal flow contrast, EGG, etc. Finally, we summarize main distinguishing and accompanying features of voiceless nasals.
