This article reflects on how the critical reading of the world and the word is presented in Freire’s literacy, having as a reference practices in the education of young, adult and elderly people from the Nucleus of Popular Education Paulo Freire – NEP of the State University of Pará, Brazil. This is a bibliographical research based on the works of Paulo Freire and the bibliographic productions of NEP educators. Among the results, it is highlighted that literacy from the Freirean perspective is a creative and critical act. A critical reading of the world and the word is developed, aiming to create opportunities for people to be subjects of knowledge and of their citizenship.
