Adjoint Modeling: A Brief Introduction

Adjoints allow efficient computation of sensitivity between input and output. While popularly known for their use in estimation and optimization, adjoint models are increasingly used to investigate the workings of complex systems. Here, we describe what an adjoint model is, how it is useful, and how it is derived.
