Kapampangan Perfective Infix -i-
Description
This paper focuses on the perfective aspect in Kapampangan. In Kapampangan, there are two ways to form the perfective aspect: the infixation of -in- in the first syllable (del Corro, 1980), and one involving changes in the initial syllable vowel of stems. Previous studies have described these changes as mere substitution of replacives (Del Corro, 1980; Forman, 2019). We argue that these changes echo Himes’ (2012) diphthong reduction and Del Corro’s (1980, 1988) monophthongization. Thus instead of having several replacive affixes, Kapampangan uses the infix -i- which produces several forms based on its environment.
