Stannic silicate, a cation exchanger, has been modified by adsorption with dithizone. Adsorption behaviour of several transition and heavy metal ions like AJ3+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ on the modified ion exchanger from aqueous solution at different pH (from 1-6) has been studied and their distribution coefficients (Kd) calculated. While Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+ and Cr3+ show very high adsorption on the modified exchanger, Fe3+ and AJ3+ are adsorbed the least among the metal ions studied. On the basis of distribution coefficients binary separations of Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+ and Cr3+ from Fe3+ and AJ3+ have been achieved on a chromatographic column packed with dithizone sorbed stannic silicate using nitric acid solution of pH 6 and pH 1 as eluents.
