Introduction to Simulation: Complex social dynamics in a few lines of code

Simulation comprise a family of powerful and versatile quantitative techniques for investigating complex, non-linear processes, such as social change, human-environmental interaction, or cultural transmission and diffusion of ideas. Using modelling frameworks derived from mathematics requires explicit definition of concepts, promotes systemic thinking, and provides a tool for formal testing of conceptual models (hypotheses-testing) and more rigorous analysis of assumptions and subjective beliefs. Despite the common believe that simulation techniques require significant technical expertise, simple yet useful models can be constructed in a matter of hours even by absolute beginners.

The aim of this tutorial is to provide a practical, hands-on training in one of the most popular simulation technique to explore social processes: system dynamics. The workshop is tailored to the needs of researchers with humanities background and limited or no computational experience. It is particularly aimed at historians, archaeologists and other researchers dealing with past and present social dynamics in their research.

 

Notes

A Python programming environment should be configured in the computer before starting the tutorial. One of the easiest ways is to install the Anaconda suite which will deploy all the needed dependencies. In addition, you will need a development environment where to type and execute our source code. You can use spyder which is already part of Anaconda. 1. Go to: https://www.continuum.io/ 2. Choose a Python 3.5 windows, linux or osx installer depending on your system (Attention: please make sure you install python 3.5 and not python 2.7). 3. Follow the installation instructions 4. Launch Spyder from the Anaconda Navigator.
