Nuevos registros de aves para la isla de Coche, Estado Nueva Esparta, Venezuela (abril 2015 - julio 2020)

La isla de Coche, estado Nueva Esparta, Venezuela, está ubicada entre las costas del estado Sucre y la isla de Margarita, y se encuentra en la ruta migratoria del corredor este, Ártico-Antillas Menores-norte de Sudamérica. Por ello, es visitada frecuentemente por aves que hacen recorrido por la misma y resulta el lugar escogido para pasar el invierno boreal por muchas especies migratorias, sobre todo de hábitos acuáticos. Durante el período comprendido entre abril del 2015 y julio de 2020 se hicieron recorridos por toda su geografía con el objetivo de reportar nuevos registros de aves. Para ello, se realizaron caminatas con una regularidad de dos veces al mes en horarios comprendidos de 06:00 h a 10:00 h y de 16:00 h a 18:00 h. Adicionalmente, se incluyeron reportes casuales de la plataforma eBird y los registros históricos reseñados por pobladores locales. Hasta ahora, su avifauna documentada estaba representada por 62 especies, pero este trabajo adiciona 87 nuevos registros de los cuales 26 corresponden a aves acuáticas y 61 son aves de hábitos terrestres, ampliando a 149 el total de especies para la isla. Esto mejora el conocimiento biogeográfico de la avifauna insular venezolana y posiciona a la isla de Coche como la segunda con el mayor número de aves reportadas entre las islas del Caribe venezolano. La isla de Coche constituye así un sitio propicio para su conservación, sobre todo cuando varias de estas aves están protegidas por la legislación internacional por sus declives poblacionales, e.g., Calidris canutus, Limosa haesmastica, Charadrius nivosus.

ABSTRACT

Coche island, Nueva Esparta state, Venezuela, is located between the coasts of Sucre state and Margarita island, and is found on the migration route of the eastern corridor, Arctic-Lesser Antilles-north of South America. Therefore, it is frequently visited by birds that travel through it and it is the place chosen to spend the boreal winter by many migratory species, especially those of aquatic habits. During the period from April 2015 to July 2020, tours were carried out throughout its extension in order to report new bird records. Walks were carried out twice a month at times 06:00 h to 10:00 h and from 16:00 h to 18:00 h. Additionally, casual reports were included from eBird platform and historical records reported by local residents. Until now, its documented avifauna was represented by 62 species, but this study adds 87 new records of which 26 correspond to aquatic birds and 61 are terrestrial birds, expanding the total number of species for the island to 149. This improves the biogeographic knowledge of the Venezuelan insular avifauna and positions Coche island as the second with the highest number of birds reported among the Venezuelan islands in the Caribbean Sea. Coche island thus constitutes a favorable site for its conservation, especially when several of these bird species are protected by international legislation due to their population declines, e.g., Calidris canutus, Limosa haesmastica, Charadrius nivosus.
