Ukrainian-language Bookpublishing in Ternopil in the 20–30s of the 20th Century Under Intensification of Oppression and Censorship Limitations

Description

The author describes social-political situation in the region, shows the activities of Ternopyl publishing houses in 20s-30s of the XXth century, analyses the work of the publishing house «Podilsk theatrical library», headed by Volodymyr Martynevych, a play-wright and bookseller, well-known in Ternopil, and the publishing house «Ternopil», specializing in publishing prose. The author analyzed the stock of books published, distribution of books inUkraineand beyond its borders – in the USA, Canada, Austria.

The fight of publishing houses against censorship restrictions in the period of Polish domination was studied. The facts proving censorship oppression of Ukrainian publishing houses and printed products: confiscation of the book «Commemorative graves» (Pamiatni mohyly) by Volodymyr Martynevych and historical novel of Andrii Chaikovskyi «To Glory» (Do slavy), which was published in «Char-Zillia» publishing house; banning of «Problems of Ukrainian religious identity» by Arcen Richynskyi, outstanding social activist, ethnologist, ideology leader of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. The book was banned be censor of Ternopil voivode region body of scientific studies. On the basis of achieve records the polemics concerning publications, which suffered from Polish censorship oppression, was studied and analyzed.
