Ivan Ohiienko and UNO in the Context of Ukrainian Diaspora Journalism of the XXth Century
Description
In the article an attempt is made to find – even though not direct, but indirect – personalized proofs of connections of outstanding Ukrainian intellectual Ivan Ohiienko (orthodox Metropolitan Ilarion) with leaders of Ukrainian Nationalists’ Organization. Special attention is paid to Ivan Ohiienko’s and UNO leaders’ cooperation in mass media publications of that time. The author gives thorough analysis of intellectual contacts and correspondence of Ivan Ohiienko and Yevhen Onatskyi, who, as a representative of Ukrainian students, entered the body of Central Council (Tsentralna Rada) and became one of its youngest members, very soon he was appointed to its Secretariat, took an active part in All-Ukrainian National Congress, which was convoked by Central Council in Kyiv. The author pays great attention to the contacts of Ivan Ohiienko with the author of “UNO Hymn” Oles Babii, with the editor and correspondent of “Ukrainian Voice” (Ukrianian Holos) newspaper Yuri Koshelniak, interesting contacts with Ukrainian intellectual, writer, chemist by profession Leonid Mosendz, correspondence of Ivan Ohiienko with Ukrainian public and political figure, President of UNR in exile Mykola Plaviuk. The author analyzes Ivan Ohiienko’s contacts with Mykola Velychkovskyi – an economist, professor, editor of “Ukrainian Quarterly”. The author of the article promulgates a great number of unknown letters, important for understanding of processes and contacts between UNO and UIA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army).
The article suggests a wide field for further scientific researches, which can lead to more thorough and detailed analysis of the connections of outstanding Ukrainian Ivan Ohiienko – Metropolitan Ilarion – with Ukrainian Nationalists’ Organization.
