A View Across the Pond: Enhancing Trans-Atlantic Cooperation and Opportunity

  • 1. Departments of Ocean Sciences and Biology, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada

Description

The signing of the Galway Statement in 2013 recognised the benefits of trans-Atlantic cooperation, particularly in the context of large-scale phenomena, shared challenges, and combining infrastructure assets and research expertise. The European Union, Canada, and United States have worked to find mechanisms to achieve these aspirations, in part through the Atlantic Research Ocean Alliance, which focuses specifically on this issue, and also through grass roots efforts of individual research programs in the different states, including ATLAS, SponGES, SeaChange, ResponSEAble, MERCES, AtlantOS, CHONe, OFI, and DOOS. This presentation will summarise these plugin efforts, including some that have already emerged as well as others that are still developing, with the primary goal of identifying opportunities that faculty, postdocs, and students may pursue in order to enhance their own present and future research.
