tci20121019-04 - Se zokwasi

Description

This is a recording of Abia Bai, Sékri Karémbu and Sitau Karémbu during a dance for a wedding feast. It is part of a public speaking genre called se zokwasi ('bark language'). Holding a bark torch, the speakers circle the dance ground during the speech. Se zokwasi takes place while the guests are taking breaks from singing and dancing. Such speeches may contain general announcements to the public, but often they are often used to address and settle problems, express opinions publicly, explain political circumstances, or to make accusations. The recording was made in Rouku village, Western Province, Papua New Guinea.
